Comments Reported from the Hillsborough Bay area in 1955. Presumed to have been brought to the United States before then by tropical fish dealers (Ref. 13090). Reintroduced in the 1970s. Accidentally released from aquaria and breeding populations were recorded in Florida. Fairly aggressive but not destructive (Ref. 1987). Depletion of aquatic vegetation reported in areas where it is common due to overgrazing. Constitute 90% of fish biomass in Lithia Springs, Florida co-occurring with largemouth bass and bluegill which appeared diseased and malnourished (Ref. 10757).
